How to Clean Stainless Steel - The Complete Guide

Stainless steel is one of the most popular materials for modern interiors — and for good reason. It is durable, hygienic, and timelessly beautiful. But like all materials, it requires the right care to maintain its appearance over time. In this guide, we will review how to clean stainless steel correctly, which products you can use, and which mistakes you should avoid.

Daily Cleaning of Stainless Steel

Daily cleaning is easy and does not require special products:

  • Damp a soft cloth with water and add a small amount of regular cleaning detergent.
  • Clean the surface thoroughly.
  • Wipe with a dry cloth or tea towel — this prevents water spots and lime streaks.

This method is sufficient for most situations and can be used daily without wearing out the material.

If Dirt is Stubborn

For more stubborn dirt, grease stains, or discolorations, there are two good solutions:

  • Use a cleaning agent specifically designed for stainless steel. It is available in most supermarkets and hardware stores and is gentle yet effective.
  • Alternatively, rubbing alcohol (70–96%) can be used occasionally. It is particularly effective against grease and provides a beautiful, spotless surface.

The Most Important Rule: Always Clean with the Grain

This is the single most important rule when cleaning brushed stainless steel — and the most common mistake made.

Look closely at the surface and notice the fine, parallel lines in the material. This is the steel's grain direction. Always clean along these lines — never across them. Cleaning against the grain leaves visible scratches that destroy the uniform, elegant finish and cannot be removed without professional polishing.

What You Should Avoid

  • Scouring pads and steel wool — they permanently scratch the surface.
  • Chlorine-based cleaning agents and bleaches.
  • Cleaning against the grain.
